Details: Its name derives from Greek, although its exact origin is uncertain: it may refer to its transparency or to its variable crystal habit. It is a very common silicate, from transparent to translucent, sometimes almost opaque. It has a vitreous (glassy) luster and is quite hard and heavy. It is of interest to both scientists and collectors. Transparent, beautifully colored specimens are often used as a gem. The most important sites are in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Austria and Russia.
